Google announced that it is temporarily stopping its artificial intelligence (AI) tool Gemini’s ability to generate images of people. The search giant made this move following inaccuracies in some historical depictions generated by the model.

In a post on social media platform X, the Alphabet-owned company said that they are working to address recent issues with Gemini”s image generation feature. “While we do this, we”re going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon,” added Google in its X post on February 22. Earlier on February 21, Google said that they are “aware” that Gemini is delivering “inaccuracies” in some historical image generation depictions.

Google has also released a statement recently saying that they are working to improve such depictions. “Gemini”s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that”s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it”s missing the mark here,” added the tech giant.

The Google Gemini image generation tool was unveiled earlier this month. Google introduced the AI tool to compete with OpenAI and Microsoft’s Copilot in the market. Several users reportedly criticised Gemini for generating historically inaccurate images that mostly showed people of color in place of white people. Amid the controversy, billionaire Elon Musk commented, “Perhaps it is now clear why xAI’s Grok is so important.”

On February 8, Google rebranded its AI chatbot, Bard, as Gemini. On that occasion, the company also announced Gemini Advanced, the paid version of Gemini. Google claims that Gemini Advanced even has the ability to recall context from previous chats. However, Gemini’s AI image generation has drawn criticism from various corners of the tech community.
