Google's New Anti-Theft Feature: Secure Your Android Device In Seconds

Google now lock your stolen Android smartphone and protect personal data.

The tech giant Google has introduced three powerful anti-theft features on Sunday  to safeguard your Android smartphone and personal data from malicious ingress. These features are now rolling out to users in the US and will be available on all eligible devices soon in several countries.

According to Google, the “Theft Detection Lock” uses machine learning to detect when your phone is stolen. If someone tries to run away with your phone, it automatically locks, securing your sensitive information. This feature can detect if the phone is being carried by foot or vehicle.

Another feature, “Offline Device Lock,” kicks in if a thief tries to disconnect your phone from the internet for an extended period. This safety feature ensures your data remains protected even if the thief tries to isolate the device.

The “Remote Lock” feature allows you to lock your stolen phone remotely using the Find My Device manager. This gives you control over your device and data, even if it’s in someone else’s hands.

How to access it?

You have to ensure that you are  running the latest Google Play services version. Go to Settings > Google > Google Services to find them.

Earlier this week, Google Photos introduced a new option that lets the users blur or hide the photos from showing them on the collection which was taken a day before or in the same week. If you change the option on Google Photos, it will hide faces from its Memories feature ensuring unwanted faces don’t appear.

How to do it:

Open Google Photos > go to the Collections tab> select “People and pets.” Choose the face you want to block or see less often, now tap the three-button menu (top right) and select “Hide face from memories.” You’ll have two options: “Show less” (disable memories from that face) or “Block face” (hide the face from memories and group photos). It is important to note that hiding faces may not work with all images.
