iOS Bug: Typing Certain Characters May Crash Your iPhone

Apple didn't respond to this, however, researchers stated that the bug doesn't seem to be a security issue.

A security researcher on Friday found that a newly discovered bug can cause your iPhone and iPads to crash. According to TechCrunch, typing may lead to a crash in ‘SpringBoard,’ the Apple mobile user interface and typing the same characters will crash the settings app in the device.

When it was typed into the Search bar in the Settings or if you type on your App Library search bar the app will crash and go back to reload as TechCrunch verified it. It was noted that triggering the bug crashes SpringBoard leaving it to reload to your lock screen again and in another test, the bug flashed the screen black for a moment.

Apple didn’t respond to this, however, researchers stated that the bug doesn’t seem to be a security issue. It is not considered a security bug said Ryan Stortz,  iOs security researcher. Security startup DoubleYou founder Patrick Wardle also stated that it can’t be mentioned as a security bug.

In 2020, a similar bug crashed the Twitter app and the users witnessed issues when they viewed a tweet with a certain set of characters on their iPhone. However, there is no evidence that the bug could be a security issue, or related to it as we have to wait until Apple opens its mouth. Last year in July, Apple released a Rapid Security Response (RSR) update treating a zero-day vulnerability allegedly affecting iPhones, Macs, and iPads. Later the company fixed the flaw with focused checks attempting to destroy the bug on the device.

Just like this, character bugs have in the past sprawled out via messages which enables to crashing iPhones of others as well, but this new bug has to be considered a significant issue since the iPhone owner has to manually type or paste the characters into the interface.
