In a bizarre turn of upshots, a robotic civil servant in South Korea ‘committed suicide’, marked as the first “Robot Suicide” in the country. The robot was working at the Gumi City Council and this ‘unfortunate incident’ happened at 4 PM on Thursday.

The ‘robot supervisor’ was found at the bottom end of the stairs between two floors of the building. The officials collected the debris for further analysis. The reason for this sudden fall was not clear but it was said that the incident befell due to his unbearable workload.

This uncanny ‘suicide’ has blown out of proportion and mixed emotions were expressed on social media platforms regarding the demise. People extended concerns about integrating robots and replacing them with human jobs. Some asked about the workload and if the robot was assigned unendurable tasks.

Some negated those questions saying that robots are made to work and the purpose is indeed to ease the jobs of humans through these robotic technologies. The robot had been a sincere servant since August 2023 and worked like a pig delivering a myriad number of documents, giving necessary information and being a work enthusiast in favour of the company’s responsibilities and assignments.

The robot worked from 9 AM until 6 PM tirelessly moving between floors to fetch and deliver important documents to the council employees and authorities. The Gumi City Council has no plan to replace the collapsed robot as they seem to put a temporary halt to the new robotic adoption. This robot was developed by Bear Robotics which is a start-up community in California. The company is known for creating robotic waiters for restaurants. However, the duties at the Gumi City Council encompassed various tasks and duties.

According to the International Federation of Robotics, robots are assigned for every ten employees within an industry as a part of a pioneering effort in South Korea, a country which is dominant for its robot density and innovations.
