As the Christmas holiday celebration kicks off across the country, many scenic tourist places become congested with the rush of tourists flocking to the site. The popular destinations of the season have become the most affected by the traffic snarl with the holiday festive buzz. The fervor of the season causes the influx of sightseers in places that attract more visitors relatively.

Many people have taken to X (formerly Twitter) showing the picture of congestion and traffic jams in many destinations. From Karnataka to Himachal Pradesh, the main roads and the entry points of major destinations such as Kodagu and Manali have been reported to have been undergoing long queues. The bumper-to-bumper traffic jam of those heading to Mysuru and Kodagu is widely shared on social media. Users warn that the Kodagu entry point has struck in the snarled-up traffic of up to 2 kilometers.

Similar is the case of Manali, one of the popular high-altitude tourist resort destinations. Users are sharing pictures of vehicles being struck in the long roadblock. This year, the Shimla police have stepped up the traffic interventions, anticipating the potential congestion in the region. The traffic congestion continues in Manali, Kasol, and Shimla, and from the Atal tunnel to Manali, the long queue is reported on the road.

The region sees more tourists as many come with the hope of experiencing the snowfall and enjoying the enchanting landscape. The week-long winter carnival in the Himachal Pradesh, which was set to begin on December 25 and last until 31 is expected to lure more tourists to the spot.

However, with the tourists flocking the destinations, the congestion and the interaction of the large crowd also raise concerns about the spread of the new variant JN.1 of the coronavirus.
