As the International Court Of Justice (ICJ) today ordered Israel to take steps to prevent the genocide in Gaza and submit the report of implementing its order in one month, here are the reactions of the key figures and agencies towards the ruling.
Though South Africa’s request for a call for an immediate ceasefire was not delivered, the petitioner”s foreign ministry responded to the ruling saying that the ruling is a decisive victory for the international rule of law and a significant milestone in the search for justice for the Palestinian people.
“There is no credible basis for Israel to continue to claim that its military actions are in full compliance with international law, including the Genocide Convention, having regard to the Court”s ruling. South Africa sincerely hopes that Israel will not act to frustrate the application of this order, as it has publicly threatened to do, but that it will instead act to comply with it fully, as it is bound to do,” the statement added.
Israel, the defendant in the case responded by stating that Israel’s commitment to international law is unwavering. However, the country further said that equally unwavering was its commitment to continue to defend its country and defend its people. “Like every country, Israel has an inherent right to defend itself,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
British politician and former opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, who had joined South Africa”s petition against Israel termed the ICJ ruling as a vital step towards justice for the Palestinians. In his statement she shared on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mr Jeremy congratulated South Africa for speaking up for the shared humanity. “If our leaders respected international law, they would call for unconditional fulfilment of the provisional measures the court has granted today,” he stated.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a Lebanese-American essayist, took to his X platform, saying that he finds himself today a little bit less disgusted with modern institutions and more hopeful for a trend towards greater justice, fairness, and morals in the face of lobbies, pressure groups, and propaganda outfits.

Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian politician and activist termed the ICJ ruling as an end of the Israeli unlawful impunity. “We are witnessing the end of Israeli unlawful impunity in front of the international Law which lasted for 75 years,” Mustafa wrote.
