Saudi Arabia’s capital city is all set to gain the title of having the world’s largest building, with the kingdom starts working on the project, set to be completed by 2030 as part of the country’s ‘Vision 2030’, which seeks to diversify its economy beyond oil and energy.
The excavation and construction have been started on the 400-meter-high, cube-shaped Mukaab supertall skyscraper in the northwest Riyadh. The project is designed by Canadian-based AtkinsRéalis. According to the designer, the Mukaab skyscraper will be cube-shaped with 400-meter-long edges. At 400 meters tall, it will be a supertall skyscraper; the building will be the tallest in Riyadh.

The developer, New Murabba Development Company, along with the fund provided by Saudi Arabia’s central Public Investment Fund (PIF), has informed that 86 percent of the groundwork has been completed, London-based architecture magazine Dezeen reports.
As per the report, the building will contain more than 100,000 homes, 980,000 square meters of shops, and 1.4 million square meters of office space, along with hotels, cultural venues, a university, a theater, and a museum. Inside the cube, there will be a giant atrium with a spiraling tower at its center, and there will be two mission square meters of shops and cultural and tourist attractions surrounding the tower, the report said, adding that the cube will be enclosed in a distinctive facade made of overlapping triangular forms referencing the modern Najdi architectural style.

Being created as a new downtown for Saudi Arabia’s capital city, Mukaab will stand at the center of the New Murabba when the works are completed. Business Magazine Bloomberg has called the upcoming project the ‘largest structure ever built in the world’ upon completion. Notably, the kingdom has also started the construction of the world’s tallest building, set to replace the UAE’s Burj Khalifa. The kilometer-high Jeddah Tower will become the world’s tallest skyscraper upon completion, which is scheduled for 2028.
