The UAE recently had reinforced a nationwide campaign “Driving without a Phone”, to warn the motorists against using mobile phones while behind the wheel, highlighting the serious risk it poses to both drivers and pedestrians.

The campaign was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, Dubai Police, Emirates Driving Institute, and Michelin Tyres.

As an initiative to curb distracted driving, the Dubai Police had released a video showcasing accident footages in order to highlight the consequences. The video captioned, “Your safety, and the safety of others, is more important than any phone call or message. Stay focused and keep your eyes on the road.”

In one of the clips shared, a driver was seen using a mobile phone and he fails to stop at a pedestrian crossing, narrowly avoiding a serious accident. And in another video shared, a truck driver crashes into a car stopped at a traffic signal, as distracted by a device.

The campaign mainly addresses the growing concern over the widespread use of mobile phones while driving on UAE roads – a leading cause of traffic violations and road accidents. The campaign was initiated as part of the GCC Traffic Week.

GCC Traffic Week is a regional initiative held annually to promote road safety across Gulf countries, with previous editions focusing on issues like speeding and seatbelt use. The GCC Traffic Week 2025 was held from April 14 to 20.

During the campaign, RTA has reminded the drivers that using a mobile phone while driving carries a fine of Dh 800 and four black points. The authority calls on motorists and users of personal mobility devices to remain fully attentive while on the road, helping to foster a culture of responsible and safe driving in Dubai.

The urgency of the campaign was emphasised citing the studies that using the phone while driving impairs reaction time as severely as alcohol consumption, by almost up to 80%.
