Gaza Under Severe Fuel Crisis, Horrific Destruction Of Life And Property

Lack of fuel hit hard on the Gaza Strip, and even the United Nations (UN) forced to stop the delivery of food and essential supplies to the besieged territory as a communication blackout hindered coordination. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) called for urgent fuel implementation to continue delivering life-saving assistance to the Palestinians. The shutdown of communication services and the depletion of fuel impacted humanitarian operations and hindered desperately needed aid efforts, said UNOCHA on Friday through X (formerly Twitter).

According to the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), at least 70 percent people in the Strip had no access to clean water because of the fuel deficiency. “Fuel shortages have deepened the crisis of a population who, overnight, had their dignity stripped”, said UNRWA on X.

They have added that the people in Gaza are dying from bombs and strikes and soon many more are expected to die from the “consequences of the siege imposed on” the territory. “Basic services crumbling Medicine running out Food + water running out Streets overflowing with sewage We should never have gotten to where we are now”, they said.

Israel announced to facilitate two tanker trucks of fuel into Gaza each day for the UN and also for the communication systems, but the amount is only half of what the UN said it needed for the lifesaving functions for the thousands in Gaza, reported the Associated Press. Fuel is necessary to power water systems, hospitals, medical clinics, trucks delivering aid, and more. The communications blackout had cut off Gaza’s 2.3 million people from one another and the outside world.

Palestinians in the Southern Gaza got evacuation notices on Thursday, in expectation of the possible expansion of Israel’s ground invasion on South. As of now, most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are crowded into the South, including those who fled already from the North considering the previous evacuation order by the Israel defence forces. Israel meanwhile reiterated that they would do its “utmost to protect the civilian population”.

The war is on its second month, and the streets of Gaza are more like graveyards. “We are witnessing the destruction of life and property on a horrific scale”, said the Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. According to him, the talks, resolutions, and statements are not enough to help the human sacrifice in the war and called the world population for an immediate action.

Mr Ghebreyesus called to ensure “unfettered access to deliver humanitarian aid” to Gaza, the release of Hamas held hostages, restoration of water, electricity, and fuel, fixing of international humanitarian law, and stop on attacks on the health care facilities and workers. What the world is witnessing is “the destruction of civility, the rules-based system, and trust between countries”, he added at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
