Amid fears of the a full- fledged war escalation in the region, Iran yesterday night carried out unprecedented aerial strikes towards Israel, marking a direct confrontation after decades of enmity. Iran has launched more than 200 missiles in late Saturday, and its alleged proxies in the region have also joined the attack against Israel.
According to Israel, minor damages have been reported in its military bases. Israel claims that 99 per cent of more than 300 missiles and Iranian drones were intercepted. The United States has stepped in to defend its greatest ally in West Asia by drowning the drones fired by Iran. President Joe Biden has said that the US has helped Israel down “nearly all” Iranian drones and missiles.
However, the US has opposed any retaliatory attack by Israel in response to an Iranian attack on its soil.
Iran was responding to an Israeli attack on its consulate, which killed some of the top Iranian officials. A senior commander in the Corps” Quds force, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, had been killed on April 1 airstrike on Iranian diplomatic premises in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
In a statement, Iran has said that the matter can be deemed concluded after its retaliatory attack against the Israeli offensive against the Islamic Republic.
As the fresh escalation looms in the West Asia, UN chief Antonio Guterres has stated that the world cannot afford another war. Condemning the Iran attack on Israel, the UN chief urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East.
Many countries including the US, China, Britain, India, Japan, France etc have expressed concern over the serious escalation in the region.
