Tehran, Iran: This is the third time Israel has attacked Iran after the eruption of war between Tel Aviv and Hamas, the Resistance movement and political power of Gaza, Palestine. According to Israeli media Channel 12, the attack was initiated by Mossad’s secret drone bases in Tehran. The report said Mossad launched kamikaze drones from inside Iran, which were pre-deployed, and remotely activated during the attack. Iran is yet to respond to this.

Experts observe that the latest attack appears to be bigger than the last two tit-for-tat fight between Tehran and Tel Aviv which took place in 2024. This time Israel directly attacked nuclear infrastructures of Tehran. Naming the attack ‘Operation Rising Lion’, Israel said the strike was to neutralise Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure and military capabilities, and was part of ”defending itself” in the region.

According to Tasnim news agency, six Iranian nuclear scientists were killed in the Israeli strikes. The scientists were identified as Abdulhamid Minouchehr, Ahmadreza Zolfaghari, Seyyed Amirhossein Faqhi, Motlabizadeh, Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoun Abbasi, reported the agency.

Outraged, Iran said that the world now better understand Tehran’s “insistence on the right to enrichment, nuclear technology, and missile power”. The country’s government said the Israeli attack underscored its need to pursue uranium enrichment and missile development programmes. “One should not speak to such a predatory regime (Israel) except in the language of power,” the government added.

Shifting from the strategic in-and-out strikes Israel has done before, the attack continues and targets multiple locations in Iran including Tabriz, Tehran, Kermanshah, Isfahan, and Natanz. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack could continue “as many days as it takes” to dismantle Iran’s nuclear threat. He also asked the Israeli citizens to stay inside bomb shelter for longer. “There are no free wars. You may very well be required to stay in protected areas for a long time. Much longer than we have been accustomed to until now”, he said, as quoted by media.

United States claims that Washington is “not involved” in the attack. In a statement released, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Israel had taken “unilateral” action against Iran and that the United States had not been involved.

Iranians were caught off guard by the attack, and are reportedly furious. People gathered outside Jamkaran Mosque in Qom calling for retaliation. Red flag were hoisted above the mosques, which reportedly symbolises the flag of revenge. Hundreds of protesters have gathered demanding a “severe punishment” against Israel. The protesters waved Iranian flags and shouted anti-Israeli slogans as they gathered in one of the country’s holiest cities 140 km (87 miles) south of the Iranian capital, as shown in one of X videos.

The geo-political climate in the region is in turmoil. Reports emerge that Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan and Syria are intercepting Iranian drones aiming at Israel. Israeli drones are hovering above Syria. Saudi Arabia and Iraq, positioning to intercept attack from Iran.

Jordanian Air Force earlier said, “This morning, Royal Jordanian Air Force jets and air defence systems intercepted a number of missiles and drones that entered Jordanian airspace”. The said drones were reported to be from Iran.

Israel said it is intercepting drones over Syria, while the country’s Channel 12 is reporting that its air force is intercepting Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over Saudi Arabia.

According to Iranian media, Tehran has sent over 200 drones against Israel, and is currently involved in holding the Israeli attacks on air, while scrambling to ensure protection for the fuel enrichment plant in Fordow, Isfahan. According to United Nation’s (UN) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), nuclear site in the city of Isfahan has not been impacted by the Israeli attacks. The agency has said that a nuclear plant in Bushehr was also not impacted.

Israel has attacked nuclear site in the city of Natanz, and fire continues for long time after the attack. IAEA has said there is currently no increase in radiation levels at the site.

As per media report, Iranian Air Force and air defences were focused on repelling Israeli projectiles from hitting Fordow site, while military bases, radar sites, and ‘secondary’ nuclear sites like Arak were “de-prioritised” for the time being.
