Prominent Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi was one among the 30 prisoners released by Israel in the sixth prisoner-captive exchange between Israel and Hamas. Tamimi was arrested earlier this month over an Instagram post which her family has said that she didn”t write. The 22-year-old was regarded as a hero since she was a teenager. The Palestinian officials has said that she was released after being jailed in Damon prison, near Israel city Haifa, reports Reuters.
“The situation in (Israeli) prison is very difficult, with daily abuse against female prisoners. They are left without water or clothes, sleeping on the floor and being beaten,” Ahed Tamimi reportedly said after being released from the Israeli prison.
After releasing from the prison, she was widely welcomed by large number of supporters. One women embraces her and tells her to be strong, to which replies boldly, “of course, I am always strong”. The Palestinian icon hails from a family known for defying Israel”s occupations for decades. Tamimi rose to international prominence after footages of her slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers in her village of Nabi Saleh went viral in 2017 and she served eight months in prison on assault and incitement charges. Her imprisonment resulted in bringing the attention of the world towards the plight of the Palestinian minors in Israeli prisons.
Soon after her release, she once again brought the attention of the world towards the cruelty faced by the Palestinians inside the prisons. She spoke about the conditions of the 30 jailed women including 10 from Gaza strip who were arrested in the recent Israel operation. She said that the female prisoners are exposed to daily basis abuse. She also revealed threats involving her father”s imprisonment. Tamimi”s father, Bassem, was arrested the week before Tamimi”s arrest.
Despite everything, Tamimi with strong determination and fearlessness said, ” we are stronger than the occupation. we will continue until freedom”. Tamimi was one of hundreds of Palestinians who have been arrested in the West Bank since October 7.
