"To Stop The Genocide Must Be A Priority": Palestinian Oscar Winner Basel Adra Slams Palestine State Recognition

European and other Western countries are following a trail of recognising the State of Palestine amid the mounting domestic and global pressure. Within 2- 3 days, almost 6-7 Western countries have given recognition to Palestine under the policy of two solution for Israel and Palestine.

So far, almost 153-156 members of the United Nations have recognised Palestine as a sovereign state. On September 21, 2025, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Portugal recognised the Palestine State. Also, on September 22, 2025, countries including France, Monaco, Luxembourg, Malta, and San Marino have given recognition to the state of Palestine.

However, the Arabs and Palestinians are not content with just the verbal recognition of the Palestinian state without halting ties with Israel and giving military support to perpetuate the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Palestinian Oscar Winner Basel Adra calls out the slew of Western countries recognising the Palestinian state. Instead, the Oscar-winning Palestinian, while calling it only a symbolic move, emphasized that it won’t change the reality on the ground, nor does it stop the genocide.

In an interview, Basel said, “You recognise a state in the midst of a Genocide. The priority is to stop the Genocide, not the recognition of a state. People do not need a state now; they need to eat, and they need to stop being killed. And stop being starved. And then you can say it’s good to recognise the state of Palestine, which had to have been done in the 90s when the Oslo Accord was signed by Palestinians under pressure, not after Israel killed the two-state solution”.

“What does it also mean to have a two-state solution for the British?  Where are the borders of these two state solutions? I think what these governments are doing is playing on your feelings. People who are going on the streets and protests and doing. The story is that when they start sanctioning settlers. Like sanctioning 10 settlers in the UK, but then there are 700,000 settlers in Israel, your airports are open freely for them. They can travel and enjoy holidays and come back and commit crimes”, Basel said.

“Markets are open for their goods. Sending and buying their weapons”, he said. The Oscar-winning Palestinian said that things won’t change much until the constant support of European and Western allies does not stops reaching out to Israel.
