Turkey Offers Military Support To Saudi Arabia Against Houthis, Cites Mecca Joint Defence Pact

Ankara, Turkey: Turkey recently offered its support for Saudi military in its fight against Houthis in Yemen. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that the country is ready to help under a trilateral defence pact with Saudi Arabia saying that the kingdom may have military needs due to the ongoing attacks by Yemen’s Houthis.

The minister’s comment come after Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement last month. As per the pact, an armed attack on any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack on all three, creating a framework for collective defence cooperation.

After Saudi launched military action against Houthis in Yemen, the kingdom has been facing retaliation, with drones and missiles hitting several cities including international airport in Riyadh.

The Iran-backed group is targeting military facilities and oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia as escalation continues. Earlier, there were reports that Saudi has sought direct military support from the United States against the Houthis, which US president Donald Trump declined. However, the US assured intelligence support and target sharing assistance.
