US To Amend UNGA's Ceasefire Draft Resolution

While the UN members call for the immediate humanitarian ceasefire, America stand steadfast in their support for Israel. As the UN General Assembly is going to call for the immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the US mission to UN has submitted an amendment to the ceasefire draft resolution that being considered by the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Al Jazeera Arabic’s correspondent reporting from UN in New York said the amendment would have the sentence, “unequivocally rejects and condemns the heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas that took place in Israel starting 7 October 2023 and taking of hostages”.

However, the top diplomats of US State Department remind the occupation force to “avoid civilian harm”. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, US Secretary, Antony Blinken talked about avoiding civilian harm in Gaza with Israeli war cabinet Minister Benny Gantz through phone call about the “ongoing efforts to facilitate the safe return of all remaining hostages, further increase levels of humanitarian assistance, and prevent the conflict from expanding”, said Mr. Miller in a statement.

He said that Mr. Blinken reiterated “that Israel must take all possible measures to avoid civilian harm”.

Meanwhile, during Hanukkah ceremony (a Jewish festival that reaffirms the ideals of Judaism) at White House, Joe Biden made his stance clear once again and commented, “right to exist as an independent Jewish state is unshakeable”. He said though he may have disagreement with Benjamin Netanyahu over the years, he stressed that his administration will continue to “provide military assistance (to Israel) until they get rid of Hamas”.

The American President received widespread criticism over his failure to call for ceasefire and blocking the resolution put forward by the UN Security Council and for bypassing Congress to provide weaponries to Israel, even though the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has sunk to the abyss. Biden government has used an Arms Export Control Act emergency declaration for delivering tanks worth $106.5 million for Israel, as said by pentagon in a statement.

US Senator Elizabeth Warron denounced the move of bypassing the Congress to provide ammunition to Israel “amid unacceptable civilian harm”. On a post on X (formerly twitter), she said, America’s military aid to Israel “should be contingent on upholding our values and international law”.
