The Washington Post, sourcing Canadian officials, stated that a senior official in the Indian government and an operative in the country’s spy agency were responsible for directing the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in the country last year. They also claimed that the killing was part of a bigger campaign of violence against Indian dissidents. The senior official was identified as Union Home Minister Amit Shah while former spymaster as 79-year-old Ajit Doval, India’s national security advisor and one of PM Modi’s closest confidants.
Tensions between India and Canada deepened, with both nations expelling diplomats amidst accusations linked to the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

On Monday, Canada ordered all six Indian diplomats who were directly involved in gathering detailed intelligence on Sikh separatists who were killed, attacked, or threatened by India’s criminal proxies, The Washington Post stated, as Canadian officials were saying.
Meanwhile, India issued a statement saying that it had withdrawn the diplomats over safety concerns. It also announced that it had expelled six Canadian diplomats.
Based on new details uncovered in the investigation about India’s role in the killing of Nijjar and other attacks, the Canadian officials said that they have uncovered extensive evidence linking a “larger outbreak of violence in Canada to the administration of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” reports The Washington Post.
Authorities also stated that the investigation revealed that the Indian government was involved in home invasions, arson, drive-by shootings, and at least one additional killing.
A senior Canadian official told the news media that the pace of threats has escalated so much that the authorities have warned ‘dozens’ of individuals of Indian descent after receiving credible information that they could be targeted.

Canadian officials also described an operational “chain” wherein Indian diplomats in Canada collect intelligence on alleged Sikh separatists, which is then used by RAW to identify targets for attacks carried out by a criminal syndicate led by Lawrence Bishnoi. His organisation has an extensive presence in Canada, said authorities.
His organisation has previously asserted responsibility for violent attacks in Canada, officials said. India has refused all allegations.
