Assassination Attempt: Top Russian General Shot In Moscow

Moscow, Russia: A senior official in Russia’s military intelligence (GRU), Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, was reportedly shot multiple times in Moscow on Friday, February 6. The general was rushed to the hospital while the accused gunman reportedly fled the scene.

The Russian authorities have termed the incident an alleged assassination attempt. The incident occurred near a residential building on Volokolamskoye Highway. The assailant allegedly shot in the back of the military official several times.

Alexeyev is deputy chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff at the Defence Ministry. Alexeyev was one of the top officials who were sent to negotiate with mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin when he staged a short-lived mutiny in June 2023.

The Moscow prosecutor’s office said Alexeyev had been shot several times at a residential building in northwest Moscow. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, several senior Russian officers have been assassinated, and in most of the cases, Russia has blamed the attacks on Kyiv.

Notably, Ukrainian military intelligence has claimed responsibility in certain cases.
