Biden Violated US Constitution, Says Democrats On US Strike In Yemen’s Houthis Targets

Many Democrat leaders and Congress representatives in the United States criticised President Joe Biden for conducting air strike on Houthis sites in Yemen without the permission from the Congress. Calling the attack as “unconstitutional,” the representatives warned that the strike could drag the US into a wider conflict in the Middle East. They also asked the White House to consult with Congress before proceeding with its airstrike in Yemen.

The US launched airstrike today (Friday) for the first time against the Yemen”s group after the Houthis started attack on the commercial ships in the Red Sea. The Houthi officials confirmed the US raid in the capital and many other areas of the country.

Reacting to the US Yemen offensive against the Houthi sites, Indian American lawmaker Ro Khanna lambasted the US president saying that the US attack on Houthi sites could land the country in another Middle East conflict and he also urged the administration to work with the Congress before continuing the attack.

“The President needs to come to Congress before launching a strike against the Houthis in Yemen and involving us in another middle east conflict. That is Article I of the Constitution. I will stand up for that regardless of whether a Democrat or Republican is in the White House,” Ro Khanna wrote in his post on X (formerly Twitter).

Another representative Val Hoyle, supporting the comment of Khanna said that the airstrike was not the one authorized by the Congress. “The Constitution is clear: Congress has the sole authority to authorize military involvement in overseas conflicts. Every president must first come to Congress and ask for military authorization, regardless of party,” he wrote on X.

Mark Pocan, another democrat, who slammed Biden for the attack on Houthi sites said that the US cannot risk to enter another conflict. “The United States cannot risk getting entangled into another decades-long conflict without Congressional authorization. The White House must work with Congress before continuing these airstrikes in Yemen,” he said.

Pramila Jayapal, the head of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, called the attack “an unacceptable violation of the Constitution.” The Party lawmaker representative Nancy Mace also criticized the decision of the Biden to attack Houthi sites saying that the Congress alone decides if the US go to war. “This is where we should put party aside and stand for the oath we all took: Congress alone decides if we go to war. I join my colleagues on both sides insisting we follow the Constitution,” Nancy Mace said. In addition, representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) took to Twitter terming the airstrike “unconstitutional” and said that the American people are “tired of endless war.”

According to the US administrative official, The US carried its historic obligation to help protect the global trade and commerce. The official justified the attack saying that this attack also comes in line with the that tradition of historic obligation. “And this action falls directly in line with that tradition. That is clearly reflected in both our national security strategy and the national Défense strategy. It is a key conviction of the president and it is a commitment that we are prepared to uphold,” he added.
