Small propeller plane carrying 12 passengers along with two crew members crashed during bad weather in Brazilian Amazon on Saturday. 14 members of the plane were killed, Reuters reported.

The tragic incident took place when the plane was nearing the end of its 400km trip between Manaus, capital of Amazonas state and the remote jungle town of Barcelos.

“I deeply regret the death of the 12 passengers and two crew members who were victims of the plane crash in Barcelos on Saturday,” said Wilson Lima, Governor of Amazonas state on X, formerly known as Twitter

“Our teams have been working from the outset to provide the necessary support. My sympathy and prayers go out to their families and friends,” he added.

An investigation has been launched to look into the cause of the accident.

From the initial investigation, Amazon state security secretary Vinicius Almeida suggested that the plane crashed after running out of runway while landing into Barcelos during heavy rain and low visibility.

The Manaus Aerotaxi airline issued a statement confirming that there had been an accident and that it was investigating but offering no details about deaths or injuries.

“We count on respect for the privacy of those involved at this difficult time and will be available to provide all necessary information and updates as the investigation progresses,” the statement said.

According to Brazilian news site G, the plane crashed was an EMB-110, a twin-engine turboprop manufactured by Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer.

The mayor of Barcelos, Edson de Paula Rodrigues Mendes has reported to CNN that the plane crashed was chartered by a businessman who works locally in game fishing.

“The passengers were going to the location to practice recreational fishing and the crash occurred due to bad weather. It was raining heavily at the time of landing,” according to CNN Brasil.

Officials have said victims body will be taken to Manaus  for identification.
