Lula da Silva, the Brazil President, said the country’s stand off with X might teach the world that “it isn’t obliged to put up with [Elon] Musk’s far-right free-for-all just because he is rich”. Lula made the comment to CNN Brasil, after Supreme Court unanimously voted to uphold ban on X, which is now largely inaccessible in Brazil, one of its biggest global markets.

Suspension of X was first ordered as a result of its refusal to obey court orders requiring the removal of profiles accused of spreading disinformation, and to name a local legal representative.

Brazil is largely divided on the rights and wrongs of preventing more than 20 million users from accessing the service. The political wisdom of the move is also under scrutiny, as fears of far right getting strength by allowing it to pose as a champion of free speech.

Reportedly, thousands of supporters of the former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro are expected to hit streets on Saturday for an independence day rally which some believe will be turbocharged by anger over the supreme court’s stance.

In particular, the way he had aligned with US Republican candidate Donald Trump, Musk has unabashedly aligned himself with Bolsonaro’s radical political movement. He shared an invitation to Saturday’s demo with his 196 million followers on X. The invitation claimed that Brazilians would turn out to “march for freedom, protesting judicial overreach and defending free speech”.

Before sharing the invitation, Musk shared another post, vouching for the march. The post said “patriotic Brazilians” were preparing to “flood” São Paulo’s financial heart to demand the impeachment of Alexandre de Moraes, the supreme court judge behind the ban on X.

Musk said the blocking of X is part of a dictatorial leftwing plot to silence the conservative voices, and is being spearheaded by Alexandre de Moraes, the Supreme Court judge.

In one of his X post, Musk called Moraes  a “dictator and a fraud, not a justice”. He also called him an “evil dictator cosplaying as a judge”, who is trying to destroy democracy in Brazil.
