Gabriel Attal's New Government Have One Major Change While The Rest Remain Same

Gabriel Attal became the new Prime Minister of the French Government. The 34-year-old is the youngest to serve as France’s premier. Attal is also France’s first gay prime minister. The new government of the French Prime Minister has been announced on Thursday. The new government consists most of the high-profile Cabinet ministers, with only one change at the foreign ministry.

Succeeding Catherine Colonna, 38-year-old Stéphane Séjourné has been named as the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister. He is the head of Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party and leader of the Renew Europe group of liberal, a pro-European lawmakers at the European Parliament.

Reportedly, Séjourné is Gabriel Attal’s ex-partner. News agency Associated Press said that Attal and Séjourné enter in to relationship when Attal first joined Emmanuel Macron’s government in 2018. Though the two men never made their relationship public, he declared about having no partner. He said that during his October declaration to the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life, that compiles declarations by high-ranking officials to record potential conflicts of interest.

By Séjourné’s appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister, no woman holds any of the top position in the government, despite constituting to half of the 14 Cabinet members appointed as Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to gender equality.

Gabriel was appointed as the Prime Minister, as Macron decided for a fresh start for the rest of his term amidst the growing pressure from the far right. Besides, even though Prime Minister is appointed, cannot be dismissed directly, by the President.
