Gen-Z March In Peru: Anti-Govt Protests Erupt; 19 Injured

Anti-government protests in Peru have injured at least 19 people over the weekend. Clashes erupted over the weekend in Lima in Peru, as hundreds of anti-government protesters marched outside the Congress demanding truly effective change and new political leadership.

Protestors knocked down the fences and burnt a symbolic coffin bearing images of President Dina Boluarte.

Reportedly, at least 19 people were injured during the dubbed ‘Gen Z march’. A police officer has also suffered burns.

A group of young people, mainly under 30 years of age, was joined by bus and taxi drivers and marched towards Congress, expressing anger over corruption scandals and growing insecurity.

As per the AFP reports, the protesters hurled stones at security forces, who launched tear gas and rubber bullets on the agitating people.

The protests erupted on September 20, followed by a pension reform passed, which requires young people to pay into a private pension fund.

Taxi and bus drivers say gangs, including the Venezuela-based Tren de Aragua, threaten them into paying ‘protection money’. They also accuse the police of turning a blind eye to the widespread extortion.

Some held placards reading demands a life without fear.

Reports say that the Gen Z protesters tried to breach the security barriers police had erected around the Congress.
