Google, Microsoft Among Top Donors To Democrats; Elon Musk Concerns Over Election Biases

Tesla CEO Elon Musk raises concerns over the introduction of biases in the US Presidential elections 2024 on social media ‘X’. The X owner shared a ‘Quiver Quantitative’ data showing the comparative donations received by the Democratic and Republican party candidates ‘Kamala Harris’ and ‘Donald Trump’.

This data reflects donations made to Harris and Trump’s principal campaign committees in the 2024 election cycle, by the business groups till September 2024. The information shows that Google, Microsoft, and Apple are among the top 5 donors to the Democrat party candidate. American Airlines, Walmart, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin are the top contributors to the Republican Party.

Elon Musk called the donations by tech giants Google & Microsoft to the Democrat Party disproportionate and insinuated the introduction of biases as they control major web browsers and searches. On X, he wrote, “Google & Microsoft very disproportionately donate to the Democratic Party. Between them, they control close to 100% of web browsers and search. Even with the best of intentions, they can’t help but introduce bias.”

Also the difference between the donation amout given in the data is also huge. The top two donors, Google and Microsoft donation to Democrat party is $1,464,292 and $743,045 respectively, whereas the donanation recieved by the Republican candidate is far less as top two Republican donors American Airlines and Walmart donations are $1,34,174 and $83,908.

Notably, the data provided by the Quiver include data from company PACs and Company employees. This includes donations to the candidate’s principal comapaign committees and does not include donations to associated PACs. Many big-money donations are excluded as a result.

However, the Tesla CEO concern did not go well with the users and they raised objections to his current political leaning with the Republican candidate. one user shared,

I find this it odd Elon Musk has an issue with Google &Microsoft giving to Democrats, but Elon the wealthiest man in History posts pro republican $ Trump posts all day on his X , Musk owns X and uses it to only promote republicans, I don’t mind, it’s just odd to complain
