India, China, Brazil Can Act As Mediators Over Ukraine, Says Putin

Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ukraine and subsequent telephonic conversation with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, today said that China, India, and Brazil could act as mediators in potential peace talks over the Ukraine war, according to a report by news agency Reuters.

While speaking at a question and answer session at Russia’s Eastern Economic Forum in the city of Vladivostok, the Russian leader expressed his readiness for peace talks based on an 2022 aborted deal between Moscow’s and Kyiv’s negotiators reached in Istanbul, months after Russia started the invasion.

According to Putin, the Kremlin and Kyiv were on the verge of a deal in the spring of 2022, but the deal was sabotaged by command from the elites of the United States and some European countries, as they wanted Russia’s strategic defeat.

Regarding the old deal, Putin said that they managed to reach an agreement, and the signature of the head of the Ukrainian delegation who initiated the document testifies to this, “which means that the Ukrainian side was generally satisfied with the agreements reached.”

The aborted deal’s terms were never made public. “Are we ready to negotiate with them? We have never refused to do so, but not on the basis of some ephemeral demands, but on the basis of those documents that were agreed and actually initiated in Istanbul,” Putin further said in Vladivostok.

Notably, after Ukraine invaded the Kurdish region of Russia, Moscow hinted that a peace talk would be impossible. During Prime Minister Modi’s trip to Ukraine a few days ago, reports had surfaced regarding India’s peacemaking role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Along with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Modi paid tributes to the soul of children who perished during the war, hoping for an early peaceful resolution.
