US President Joe Biden launched hard jibe at his “dangerous” Presidential election rival Donald Trump. He said Trump is “bowing down” to the Russian President Vladimir Putin, and vowed that he “will not bow down”. The President did not directly used Trump’s name, instead repeatedly referred him as “my predecessor, a former Republican president”.
During a State of the Union address, Biden warned that the US democracy is under assault. The President gave a dramatic start to his speech, in which he said that he wanted to “wake up the Congress and alert the American people” to the danger.
He said, “not since President Lincoln and the Civil War, have freedom and democracy been under assault at home as they are today…what makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack at both at home and overseas”.
The annual set-piece Presidential speech was a unique chance for Joe Biden to pitch his reflection message in front of his closest allies and foes. The just an hour-long speech is also a high-stakes test of the ability the 81-year-old President, making a history as the oldest ever US President.
Though the Republicans booed and heckled Biden’s speech, he shot back each time. The President mocked his opponent over everything from planning to cut billionaires’ taxes to refusing to take the climate change seriously.
The President also hit at the opponents of abortion from the Republicans. He said they have “no clue about the power of women in America”, which Democrats see as a key vote-winning issue.
The Democrat also took on the war in Gaza, which has caused fury among the leftist and the Arab-American community over Biden’s relentless support for Israel’s war of Gaza. He said he asked US military to set up a port on Gaza’s coast to bring in more aid to the Palestinians, reflecting on the acute political pressure from many of his own party. Protesters, who are against Biden’s support for Israel’s war on Palestine, tried to block the President”s motorcade from White House to Congress.
