“Judiciary Has Further Eroded Its Credibility”: Imran Khan On Latest Sentence

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has sharply criticised the judiciary after being sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case. His wife, Bushra Bibi, also received a seven-year sentence.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the anti-corruption court announced the verdict, which had been delayed three times. This case marks the largest financial scandal Imran Khan has faced. Khan, who has been imprisoned in Rawalpindi since August 2023, issued a defiant message from Adiala Jail, accusing the judiciary of undermining its own credibility.

“Following the dark verdict in the Al-Qadir Trust case, the judiciary has further eroded its credibility,” Khan stated. He alleged that judges who act on directives are rewarded, claiming, “The judges nominated for the Islamabad High Court have only one qualification: delivering rulings against me.”

The former prime minister vehemently defended his innocence, calling the case baseless. “The Al-Qadir University, like Shaukat Khanum Hospital and Namal University, is a free charitable institution for the public. Neither I nor Bushra Bibi gained a single penny from the Al-Qadir University, nor did the government incur any loss.”

Khan further claimed the land associated with the trust had been seized, saying, “Even the land of the Al-Qadir Trust has been taken back, which will only harm the underprivileged students who were studying about the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).”

He condemned the trial process, alleging that the outcome was predetermined. “The outcome of the Al-Qadir Trust case was known to everyone beforehand. Whether it was the delay in the verdict or the discussions regarding punishment, everything was leaked to the media in advance. Such mockery has never been witnessed in the history of the judiciary.”

Turning his attention to his political opponents, Khan questioned why figures like Nawaz Sharif were not held accountable. “This case should have been against Nawaz Sharif and his son, who sold their 9-billion-rupee property in the UK to Malik Riaz for 18 billion rupees. The receipts demanded from them in the Panama case have never been produced,” he said.

Khan also drew comparisons to historical events, urging the nation to revisit the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report. “The history of 1971 is being repeated in Pakistan. Yahya Khan destroyed the country, and today, the dictator is doing the same to protect his dictatorship and personal gains, pushing the country to the brink of destruction,” he remarked.

Bushra Bibi’s sentence, according to Khan, was intended to cause him personal anguish. “My wife is a homemaker with no connection to politics. Bushra Bibi was punished solely to cause me pain and exert pressure on me,” he stated, adding that she had remained steadfast in facing earlier accusations.

Khan reaffirmed his commitment to his cause, vowing not to compromise. “I will never accept this dictatorship, and I am prepared to remain in a prison cell for as long as it takes in the struggle against this tyranny. I will not compromise on my principles or the fight for the true freedom of the nation,” he declared.

He also criticised the government’s reluctance to establish a judicial commission for key incidents, including the events of May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024. “Dishonest individuals never allow neutral umpires to intervene. The government is avoiding the demand for a judicial commission because it is dishonest,” he said.

Khan concluded with a message of resilience for his supporters: “First and foremost, you must not lose hope. Our commitment is to real freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. We will fight until the last ball to achieve this.”
