North Korea criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for joining a US-led campaign and passing a resolution over its nuclear programmes. North Korea addressed the agency as ‘paid trumpeter’ for Washington.
Pyongyang accused the agency for spreading false stories about an imminent nuclear test. An unnamed spokesperson of Pyongyang’s Ministry of Nuclear Power Industry released the statement criticising the resolution adopted on Friday by the agency which has instructed the North to curb its nuclear programmes in a general conference.
The spokesperson also commented that the resolution is a “result of conspiracy” by the US and its allies. He also stated that North Korea’s status as a nuclear weapon state has already become “irreversible”.
“Such farce of the hostile forces is a revelation of their sinister intention to cover up their criminal acts of seriously threatening the international nuclear non-proliferation system and justify their hostile policy toward The Democratic People”s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” he said, according to state media KCNA.
Rafeal Mariano Grossi, Director General of IAEA warned last year that the reclusive country could resume nuclear testing for the first time since 2017.
The spokesman said that the agency can only avoid such criticism if they start to consider taking actions to tackle the difficulties faced by the international community referring to US nuclear proliferation and Japan”s discharge of wastewater from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant, reports Reuters.
The IAEA had no access in North Korea since 2009 as the inspectors were expelled from the country and then restarted nuclear testing.
