Estefanía, and Azahara, a lesbian couple from Spain have become parents a baby they both carried, Metro reports. The baby named Derek Eloy was born in October. When Azahara (27) carried her son for nine months, the egg that went on to produce him was fertilised in Estefanía”s womb. They are the first same-sex couple in the Europe and second in the world to have a baby both carried. The couple used an innovative fertility treatment called INVOcell to help bring the baby into the world.

Estefanía, and Azahara started the process in March with the assistance of a fertility clinic. In the INVOcell fertility treatment, a small capsule, about the size of a thumb, containing eggs and sperm is placed inside the vagina which enables fertilisation in a way similar to natural conception. Estefanía underwent the fertility treatment, and after five days, the capsule was removed and the embryos were examined and selected. Then it was being placed into Azahara’s uterus for further growth. She carried the baby for nine months and gave birth via c-section on October 30. For the treatment and medication, the couple had to pay more than 4,400 Pounds (Rs 4,57,909).

A doctor from the team explained how Derek”s birth was made possible: “The novelty in this process is that both could carry the embryo and share it for as long as needed.”  Estefanía said: “Now, I look at him, my partner and I look at each other, and we feel that it’s something that has been within both of us, something we’ve done together.”

“It was a way for both of us to be able to carry him. The idea that I could participate in this way and carry him in my womb was much more exciting,’ she added.

Metro reports that Derek is the first European baby born through INVOcell. The technology and treatment are getting popular.
