Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, raised the need to maintain peace in Kashmir during 78th high-level session at UN General Assembly held at New York on September 19, 2023.

Mr. Erdogan stated that India and Pakistan should try to disentangle themselves from the issues disturbing the peace between the two countries while accentuating the significance of resolving Kashmir issues for a long-lasting peace in South-Asia.

“Another development that will pave the way for regional peace, stability and prosperity in South Asia will be the establishment of a just and lasting peace in Kashmir through dialogue and corporation between India and Pakistan”, said Mr. Erdogan during his address to the General debate on Tuesday.

He further said that Turkiye will continue to support necessary steps taken for achieving this. “As Turkiye, we will support the steps to be taken in this direction”, Mr. Erdogan said.

This is not the first time the Turkiye President bringing up the Kashmir issue in UN General Assembly, he continue to bring Kashmir during his address to the world leaders in the UN General Assembly despite India”s rigid take that Kashmir is an internal matter.

“India and Pakistan, after having established their sovereignty and independence 75 years ago, still haven”t established peace and solidarity between one another. This is very unfortunate. We hope and pray that a fair and permanent peace and prosperity will be established in Kashmir”, the Turkiye President had said.

He also lauded India for its role at the United Nations Security Council and also stated India”s leadership at the institution was a matter of great pride.

Mr. Erdogan also pressed the demand of expanding the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) from 5 to 20 by including 15 more countries as the permanent UNSC members. “Those 20 should be permanent members of the UNSC in rotation. But as you know the world is bigger that five” he said by stating the world is larger than US, UK, France, China and Russia.
