A man named Manuel Rivera was charged with killing his nine-year-old son and torching the body in a school parking lot. The man then sent disturbing video of the murder to his wife before attempting to kill himself, said media report.

The 43-year-old man allegedly owned up the crime and apologised to his wife in a video message just before he did the crime. The man told the wife that he would see her in afterlife and asked his remains to be cremated, as per police documents obtained by News 12. The man also left a suicide note at home with a similar message.

As per the Patch, the suicide note read, “this is how it ends for me and (their son). I know we couldn’t live without each other. Today is the day death does us part”. Reportedly, the couple had been going through marital troubles before the incident took place.

The man’s family called Sayreville police on March 28. The family reported that Rivera and his son Christian went missing after the man former threatened to kill them both and fled the home after a dispute. As the police responded to the call, report emerged of a fire at the Sayreville High School around 10:45 pm.

The police officers discovered that the burning car belonged to Rivera and has the body of his son inside it. Rivera was also present at the scene, sitting outside the burning car bathed in gasoline and cut around his neck and burns on his body. Video footage showed the man pulling into the parking lot and pouring gasoline over the car and set it aflame. It is believed that he killed his son before the burning.

The man was hospitalised in a critical condition. He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree desecration of human remains, aggravated arson, and endangering welfare of a child.
