
World’s Largest: China-Made Cargo Ship Can Hold 220,000 Tonns, Stack 24,000 Containers
Beijing, China: Being home to the world’s largest or biggest entities is often a source of proud for the citizens in the respective countries. Many of them have been assets of Europe and America until the recent past. However, the trend has been undergoing drastic change in the past few decades, with several Asian countries claiming many such historic feats.
Like every other field, the maritime industry has undergone considerable transformation, especially in development and evolution of container ships that are the largest and most efficient. One such is China-made world’s largest cargo ship, which recently took to the sea. With a capacity to hold 220,000 tons of goods, the ship can stack 24,000 containers, which is as tall as a 25-story building.

Counted as one of China’s notable contributions in connecting to the world while reducing logistics costs, the grand colossal vessel was seen taking to the sea on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Taking to the social media platform X, Mao Ning, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Director General of the Department of Press, Communication and Public Diplomacy, shared the footage of the ship navigating through the ocean.
“The world’s largest cargo ship made in China takes to the sea! It can hold 220,000 tons of goods and stack 24,000 containers as tall as a 25-story building. China is contributing to connecting the world and reducing logistics costs,” the spokesperson wrote on X.

Ships have evolved over time, and during 1970s, Panamax ships, with a capacity of 4,000 TEUs, were considered giants. As global trade expanded, the demand for larger and more efficient ships grew, and in early 2000s, Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), revolutionising the changed the shipping industry.
The MSC Irina, a container launched in 2023 is considered as one of the largest ships in the world currently. The Ship has a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, which has been operating on major Asia-Europe routes.
