One of India’s trade gateways, Nhava Sheva Port (JNPT) is experiencing bottlenecks due to the vessel congestion.The congestion lead to delay in container pickups and drops. It is also creating troubles in other major terminals.
Also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Nhava Sheva is the largest container port in India. The port, located in Mumbai, plays a vital role in facilitating India’s international trade activities. However, the disruptions reported in recent days caused container trucks to experience an average delay of six to eight hours per transaction. The delay is said to be due to volume buildups and erratic vessel schedules.

The widespread disruptions and delays have also affected India’s exports and imports, including the delivery schedules.
Container freight station (CFS) owners are witnessing significant cost implications due to high yard inventory levels and difficulty clearing cargo from the dock, exacerbating the vessel crowding.
Congestions are also reported at other major ports, further troubling logistics for India’s trade gateways. Industry stakeholders have highlighted inevitability for improved cargo flow planning and coordinated efforts at port and terminal levels to mitigate the impacts of congestions.

The Nhava Sheva Container Operators Welfare Association is issuing advisories to inform the trade community about the latest situations.
The Nhava Sheva Port had suffered similar congestion in the past too. The chairperson of the port recently announced the plan for the expansion work to begin by April 2025, and complete by 2029.
