QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024: IIT Delhi In Top 100

IIT Delhi secured 45th rank in the recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. This is the 14th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. It highlights the substantial progress of universities in the academic domain. The institute also secured rank under the top 100 under the broader categories of subjects including engineering and technology, natural science, and business and management studies.

The heads and faculties of the institutions expressing pleasure over the global ranking highlighted the innovative and technological measures taken at the institute to excel. Prof. Vasant Matsagar, Head of the Department, of Civil Engineering, at IIT Delhi, said, “The Institute is in a top position in Civil Engineering, as today the department leads not only in the development of human resources but also in innovating futuristic technologies.”

He also emphasized the role of the institute in contributing to the fight against climate change and SDGs. “The activities in the department contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation, catering to the needs of disaster resilience and facilitating effective climate action in line with India’s nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The department is now globally recognized as a center of cutting-edge research for the development of sustainable infrastructure”.

Prof. Jayadeva, Head of the Department, of Electrical Engineering, at IIT Delhi, citing the top position of the institute over the years said, “For several years, the Institute has consistently been in the top position in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, owing to the leadership shown by faculty, student placement, well-cited cross-disciplinary research in leading areas, substantial research funding, and the success of its alumni worldwide”.

Prof. Prem Kalra, Head of the Department, of Computer Science and Engineering, at IIT Delhi, said, “The CSE department has earned recognition for both research and teaching and has been steadily growing with its outstanding faculty members contributing to it. The department has also received support from the institute and its alumni in its progressive journey”.

QS World University Rankings: Subject-wise ranks

The institute is ranked among the top 100 institutes in the world in the following specific subject areas including

  • Civil and Structural Engineering (Global Rank 39)
  • Mechanical Engineering (Global Rank 50)
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Global Rank 55)
  • Computer Science and Information Systems (Global Rank 63)
  • Chemical Engineering (Global Rank 86)
  • Material Sciences (Global Rank 89)
  • Environmental Sciences (Global Rank 100)
  • Business and Management Studies with a global rank of 91.

Country-wise performance

Notably, within the country In Civil Engineering, Electrical, and Computer Science Engineering, IIT Delhi is in the top position and holds the 2nd position in Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

At the national level, the institute secured the top position in the Environmental Sciences and holds the third position in the Material Sciences.

Moreover, ranked 20th globally, Jawahar Lal Nehru University has emerged as the top university in India for Development Studies and is a recent addition to this field. Additionally, the university also ranked 11th in academic reputation.
