As Cannes rolled out the red carpet, stars across the globe came out for a glitzy rendezvous. Unlike year before, political statements are muted at the posh film festival. Since the huge part of the world started to resonate pro-Palestine sentiments in which ever way possible for them, the stars on Cannes also showed solidarity with the war-torn Palestine.

First one to be noticed for displaying support for Palestine was Cate Blanchett. The Australian star stole the limelight with her outfit that heavily resembled Palestinian flag. She wore a bodycon gown with white in the front and black coloured in the back. While walking down the red carpet, Cate lifted her dress, which showed a green lining. All the mentioned colours are of what the Palestinian flag is made up of.

Pro-Palestine supporters have been using white, red, black, and green in any which way possible, reverberating their solidarity for the Palestinians. The Palestinian Kaffiyeh, and resistance symbols like keys, and watermelon are widely used to the point that it no longer require explanation to be understood what their presence meant.

Though Cate did not made any comments mentioning that her dress was a nod to support for Palestine, netizens praise her for the move. The Oscar winning star, who is also a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), often raised voice for Palestine. In November last year, she called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza at the European Parliament.

Pascal Kann, the British actor, appeared in a black dress bearing the word Palestine written in Arabic, with one letter made in the shape of a heart. She came for the screening of the film “September Says”. Kann, along with her colleagues including Rakhee Thakrar, Greek-French director Ariane Labed and Greek actor Mia Tharia were seen with their hands over the mouth, which many understood to be a protest against the silencing of the pro-Palestine voices.

Italian actor Jasmine Trinca and French-Algerian actress Leila Bekhti wore pins to show their support for Palestine. Australian actor Guy Pearce appeared on the red carpet with a bracelet made up of the colours of the Palestinian flag.

Another star who stole the lime light was India”s Malayalam star Kani Kustruti. The star came for the screening of All We Imagine As Light. She held high her bag shaped as a slice of watermelon with a vibrant smile etched on her face. She was being widely appreciated online for the move.

It is to keep in mind that none of these stars made any statement or confirmation on the understood meaning behind their acts.
