BMW AG has introduced the prototype of its upcoming electric vehicle (EV) lineup, marking a significant step in its efforts to catch up to Tesla Inc and maintain its sales momentum in its crucial market, China.

The Vision Neue Klasse Concept:

Unveiled at the upcoming IAA show in Munich, the Vision Neue Klasse concept car showcases BMW”s dedicated EV platform, scheduled for release in 2025. This timeline aligns with the introduction of new electric models by Mercedes-Benz Group AG. Notably, software- challenges have delayed similar platforms from Volkswagen AG, affecting the launch of key Porsche and Audi EVs.

Shift in Marketing Focus:

BMW is exiting from its longstanding tradition of emphasising the performance of its “ultimate driving machines” with the sleek coupe. Instead, the company is highlighting innovations such as a digital display spanning the entire width of the windshield and advanced software capable of processing voice commands and hand gestures.

China-Centric Features:

This shift in strategy is a response to changing consumer preferences in China, where homegrown EV manufacturers like BYD Co. and Nio Inc. have excelled in creating EVs tailored to local tastes. BMW aims to cater to this market with the Neue Klasse.

Oliver Zipse, BMW”s CEO, describes the Neue Klasse as setting the company”s course for the coming decades.

Challenges in the Chinese Market:

Historically, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi dominated the premium combustion-engine car market in China. However, they have struggled to adapt to China”s rapid shift towards electric vehicles. BYD overtook Volkswagen as China”s top-selling automaker, and Mercedes had to cut prices for its flagship electric sedan following disappointing sales.

Growing EV Market in China:

With electric cars and plug-in hybrids projected to make up 90% of China”s auto market by the end of the decade, Western premium brands face increasing pressure to accelerate their EV offerings. A price war initiated by Tesla in China has further intensified competition.

BMW”s Neue Klasse Features:

BMW”s upcoming Neue Klasse models are expected to offer an impressive range of up to 800 kilometres on a single charge and can charge from 10% to 80% in under half an hour. While these figures are commendable, they may not make BMW the leader in these categories. For reference, Mercedes demonstrated an electric prototype that covered over 1,000 kilometres on a single charge last year.

BMW”s unveiling of the Vision Neue Klasse concept signals the company”s commitment to remaining competitors in the rapidly evolving EV market, particularly in China.
