1. Willys Jeep
The Willys Jeep, the original off-roader, was introduced when India achieved Independence. This SUV quickly gained popularity for its ruggedness and off-road capabilities. Initially reserved for the Indian Army but later found its way to the consumer market where it became a big hit thanks to its potent off-roading. Jeep Willys became a revered SUV among serious off-roading enthusiasts.
2. Land Rover Series 1
The Land Rover Series 1 was launched in India in 1950 and became a favourite among off-road enthusiasts for its four-wheel drive capability and durability. The original off-roader, laid the foundation for the first generation Defender which can still be seen on the roads of North East India.
3. Maruti Suzuki Gypsy
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, was known for its simplicity, ruggedness, and affordability. It was launched in 1986continues to be the most preferred vehicle for the Indian armed forces till date. It was in production till 2018 before it was discontinued afterwards. However, it gained popularity in a short span of time due to its road presence and modest petrol engine.
4. Mahindra Armada
Another rugged SUV by Mahindra was the Armada, which was introduced in 1993. It was a more refined and comfortable off-roader offering a balance between regular commutes in the village equipped with off-roader capabilities. It remained in production till 2001 and was replaced by the Bolero, which continues to be one of the best sellers from theMahindra’s stable of off-roaders.
