A 70-year-old Uber driver from North Carolina in the USA recently made the shocking revelation that he earned around $28,000 (over Rs 23 lakh) in a year by strategically canceling over 30 percent of his trips. According to a report in Insider, the cab driver, who goes by the pseudonym “Bill”, accepted only less than 10 percent of his rides and canceled over 30 percent of them in 2022.

In 2022, 70-year-old Bill undertook roughly 1,500 Uber trips. Bill retired six years ago and started working part-time at Uber to earn an extra income. He revealed to the Business Insider that he only takes rides that are worthwhile and profitable. Bill also stated that he prefers to drive during surges. However, Bill felt that surges in and around the locality where he lives have become less common, and it has “decreased his driving hours”.

Bill also revealed a few strategies that he used to make more money. He said that he places himself at high-demand locations like airports and bars during rush hours between 10:00 pm to 2:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays. “When a plane lands and people request Ubers the price jumps drastically,” Bill said to the Insider. The cab driver also said that avoiding one-way rides is another key strategy. He also recalled an experience in which he drove a passenger to a rural place for $27, but left him driving back without passengers.

The report also mentions that certain risks are also connected with Bill”s approach. According to Uber, drivers who cancel much higher than Uber”s 10 percent recommended levels will lose access to the company”s rewards programme, which provides petrol discounts and other rewards. However, Bill is planning to move forward with the same plan. “I drive to get out and don’t need the money. I love it,” said Bill.
