The Union Government has launched India’s first cooperative taxi service, Bharat Taxi. The initiative, touted to be a direct challenge to private players such as Ola and Uber, was developed under the Union Ministry of Cooperation and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD). The pilot phase of Bharat Taxi is set to begin in November in Delhi, with 650 vehicles and their owner-drivers.

The new initiative is believed to solve commenters’ long-standing complaints about app-based taxi services. For years, complaints regarding dirty vehicles, inflated fares, arbitrary cancellations and sudden surges in pricing have been raised by travelers in popular ride-hailing apps. Even drivers have also voiced discontent over high commission rates charged by companies, often losing up to 25 percent of their fare revenue.

The endeavor aims to provide drivers with full ownership of their earnings while offering commuters a government-supervised alternative to private cab aggregators.

As per the reports, the government initiative seeks to transform the sector. Bharat Taxi drivers will not pay any commission on their rides, unlike private players.
