Despite Lamborghini”s push towards electrification, with the Urus and Revuelto already plug-in hybrids and the Huracan successor debuting as a V8 PHEV this August, the brand remains committed to its ICE roots.

Lamborghini”s Electrification and ICE Commitment

Lamborghini is on track to fully electrify its lineup this year. However, ICE vehicles continue to be central to Lamborghini”s identity. Recent models like the Huracan Sterrato, STO, and the Urus Performante and S celebrate this legacy even as the company transitions towards electrification. The potential of synthetic fuel is now being explored as a way to keep ICE vehicles viable.

Synthetic Fuels: Potential and Prospects

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, previously hinted at synthetic fuels being used in racing, particularly in the one-make Super Trofeo series. For regular production models, Winkelmann had been non-committal, suggesting that it was a matter of waiting to see how things developed. However, in a recent discussion with Autocar Professional, Winkelmann provided a clearer outlook. He stated that Lamborghini aims to have two sports cars capable of running on synthetic fuels with hybrid engines after the end of this decade. For everyday cars, electrification remains the priority.

Winkelmann acknowledges that the transition to a fully electric future is slower than expected, with EV adoption lagging behind projections. Therefore, Lamborghini is pursuing a parallel development strategy, incorporating both electrification and synthetic fuel technology.
