Renault R5 E-Tech: Reviving A Classic With Electric Ingenuity

Renault is setting its sights on challenging Chinese manufacturers in the European market with its latest electric offering, the Renault R5 E-Tech. Priced competitively at around 25,000 euros for the base model, this stylish city commuter aims to capture the attention of modern consumers while paying homage to Renault”s iconic R5 and Super 5 models from the  year 1970s and 1980s, which collectively sold nine million units between the year 1972 and 1996.

Drawing inspiration from its predecessors, the R5 E-Tech features vertical lights and vibrant body colours reminiscent of its classic counterparts. However, Renault is keen to emphasize that this is more than just a retro throwback. The R5 E-Tech is designed to meet the specific needs of today”s electric vehicle buyers. Set to debut in the second half of 2024, the first edition of the R5 E-Tech features a 52-kilowatt hour (KWh) battery, providing an estimated range of 400 kilometers.

One of the key highlights of the R5 E-Tech is its support for bidirectional charging, enabling owners to sell excess energy back to the grid. Additionally, the vehicle features V2L (vehicle-to-load) charging capabilities, further enhancing its versatility. With a weight of less than 1500 kilograms, a spacious cargo area of 326 liters, a wheelbase of 2540mm, and a flat floorbed, the R5 E-Tech is designed to accommodate the needs of modern urban dwellers. Further, it boasts a towing capacity of 500 kilograms.

Renault is trying to position the R5 E-Tech as a modern and capable electric vehicle that has the potential to revolutionize the market in Europe. Renault Group has expressed enthusiasm about the R5 E-Tech, stating, Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a car unlike any other. Its launch signifies a significant transition as millions of Europeans embrace a new era of electric, connected, and sustainable mobility.

Developed in just three years in France, the Renault R5 E-Tech exemplifies Renault”s commitment to innovation and agility in response to the rapidly evolving automotive landscape. With its blend of retro-inspired design elements and cutting-edge electric technology, the R5 E-Tech is set to make a significant impact in the European electric vehicle market.
