Volkswagen To Use Connected Car Tech From OPPO With Bilateral Patent Licensing Agreement
Volkswagen and smartphone manufacturer OPPO have signed a global intellectual licensing deal that would allow OPPO to license its portfolio of cellular standard-essential patents, including 5G, to the group. In order to improve user experiences for its connected car products throughout its worldwide product lineup, Volkswagen will receive a license for OPPO’s cellular standard-essential patents.
Vincent Lin, OPPO’s Head of Patent Licensing, stated, “We are thrilled to work with Volkswagen through this patent licensing agreement.” “We greatly appreciate the Volkswagen IP team’s diligence and vision in recognizing the importance of this collaboration.” “Our dedication to building a long-term, robust, and sustainable intellectual property ecosystem that supports long-term innovation and industry growth is further recognized by this partnership,” he continued. “OPPO is a leader in cellular technology innovation.”

According to Robin Cefai, Chief IP Licensing Officer at Volkswagen, “the partnership with OPPO is an example of efficient, respectful, business-focused collaboration in the space of licensing of Standard Essential Patents.” It demonstrates Volkswagen’s readiness to acknowledge the importance of intellectual property and come up with long-term solutions that benefit everyone.
Automakers and component suppliers face shortages due to Chinese rare earth exports. The partnership, which is OPPO’s first-ever bilateral patent licensing deal with a connected-car firm, shows how its cellular standard-essential technologies are being adopted more widely outside of smartphones, particularly in the automotive industry. As of January 2025, OPPO was ranked ninth internationally in terms of total 5G patent strength, according to LexisNexis IPlytics, a top patent analytics tool. OPPO’s 5G SEPs are presently available in more than 40 countries and regions worldwide.

OPPO has more than 62,000 awarded patents worldwide as of March 2025, and it has submitted more than 1,13,000 patent applications. OPPO is still investing in key technology areas like charging, image, video, 5G/6G, and artificial intelligence. By extending OPPO’s cellular standard-essential patents, including 5G, into the rapidly growing connected car industry, this historic worldwide patent licensing deal between OPPO and Volkswagen marks a significant turning point. This partnership, which is OPPO’s first with an automotive company, highlights how sophisticated car models are increasingly depending on reliable cellular connectivity to improve user experiences throughout Volkswagen’s global lineup.
Both sides stress their commitment to sustainable licensing procedures and their shared appreciation of the value of intellectual property. This relationship strengthens OPPO’s position as a leader in cellular innovation, as demonstrated by its substantial worldwide 5G patent strength and broad portfolio of patents in 40 countries. The importance of safe, licensed technologies is highlighted by this breakthrough, which is especially notable in light of global supply chain issues like rare earth shortages that affect automakers. This partnership with Volkswagen opens the door for a more thorough integration of mobile communication technologies inside the developing automotive sector, as OPPO continues to invest in cutting-edge fields like 6G and AI.
