Skoda’s German cousin has been hesitant to enter the sub-4-meter SUV market, which is saturated by giants like the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and Tata Nexon, to mention a few. Skoda entered this market with the Kylaq late last year.

But given Kylaq’s popularity, Volkswagen might be persuaded to enter the subcompact SUV market. The Tera, which Volkswagen debuted in Brazil a few months ago, is the most well-known contender. Another feather has been added on the subcompact’s hat. Latin NCAP has given the Tera a 5-star safety certification.

The Brazil-specific Volkswagen Tera has received ratings of 84.76% for Safety Assist, 75.77% for Pedestrian Protection and Vulnerable Road Users, 87.25% for Child Occupant Protection (COP), and 89.88% for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP). Both the driver and the passenger have adequate knee, neck, and head protection in the frontal offset deformable barrier test. The passenger’s chest protection received a high rating, while the driver’s received a moderate rating.

It was determined that both occupants had sufficient tibia protection. While protection for the head, abdomen, and pelvis was evaluated as good, protection for the chest was graded as adequate in the side pole impact test and as marginal in the side deformable barrier test. It was determined that the bodyshell was sturdy and able to endure further forces.

According to the studies, the Tera performed average to well in the dynamic testing related to child protection. The car received nine out of thirteen points for the vehicle evaluation, twelve out of twelve for installation, and twenty-seven out of twenty-four for the dynamic assessment. The kid dummy had minimal chest protection but complete head protection thanks to ISOFIX anchorages and a support leg held it in a rearward-facing position.

Six airbags, ADAS technology, and electronic stability control (ESC) were standard on the tested prototype. With the exception of the Tera marketed in Argentina, where the technology is available only in the top version and as an option in the other variants, all Tera models come equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), a characteristic that is required for earning five stars in the Latin NCAP.

Volkswagen’s Taubaté plant in Brazil produces the Tera, which is based on the well-known MQB A0 platform. The Tera’s arrival in India has not yet been formally confirmed by Volkswagen. In the upcoming months, a formal announcement regarding the same can be anticipated.
