Volvo EX60 Seen For First Time Before 2026 Debut With Scalable SPA3 Framework

The electric version of the XC60 SUV, the EX60, was initially shown off by Sweden-based Volvo. The all-electric EX60, which was unveiled as a full-size clay model during the Volvo ES90 unveiling event, would go on sale abroad the following year. Following its debut, Volvo’s EX60 SUV will fall between the EX40 and EX90 in the company’s EV lineup. The forthcoming electric car, however, will be based on the more recent SPA3 (scalable product architecture) rather than the SPA2 platform that supports the premium EX90 SUV and ES90 sedan.

The upgraded EX60 will probably support such fast charging speeds because the ES90 is already 800V charging compatible (up to 300km in 10 minutes). Anders Bell, the tech leader for Volvo, referred to the SPA3 as “100 percent electric and 100 percent Volvo Cars”; instead of a shared platform with its parent company, Geely.

The Volvo EX30, for instance, makes advantage of a shared SEA base. The upgraded SPA framework will eventually be used by Volvos of all sizes. Over-the-air (OTA) updates will also be provided to Volvo’s Superset technology stack in order to control the EX60 EV and its features.

Another benefit of the latest SPA3 construction is that it allows for mega-casting – a technology that allows for entire sections of a car to be made as a single unit rather than multiple parts. As a result, a lot of the production costs can be lowered. Notably, the EX60 is the first Volvo car to profit from mega-casting.

Volvo India has stated that the EX90 and EX30 will go on sale in 2025; the latter is also being explored for local production. Every Volvo SUV and vehicle sold here is put together locally. The carmaker currently offers the C40 Recharge (Rs 62.95 lakh) and EX40 (Rs 56.10 lakh) in this market for green mobility. In the future, Volvo might think about adding the EX60 to its lineup of all-electric vehicles.

The Volvo EX60 is set to be a game-changer in Volvo’s EV lineup, bridging the gap between the EX40 and EX90 with cutting-edge SPA3 architecture. Featuring fast charging, mega-casting for cost efficiency, and OTA updates, it promises a high-tech driving experience. While its India launch remains unconfirmed, Volvo’s expanding EV portfolio suggests it could arrive soon.
