“I don’t believe in taking right decisions. I take decisions and then make them right” -these were the golden words of Mr. Ratan Tata. The esteemed industrialist and philanthropist, passed away at 86, leaving legacy of unending tales to get inspired from.
The passing away of Ratan Tata is one of the most significant losses for India and to the automobile industry. His impact on Indian business, society, and global perceptions of the nation would leave a void forever. Ratan Tata, has not only been a titan in the business world but has also been a unique blend of visionary leadership and an empathetic leader, making him an irreplaceable figure in Indian society and the automobile industry.

Some of the most iconic cars were from the legendary manufacturer like the Tata Estate, Sierra, Indica, Mana, Tata Nano and the most sought after Tata Nexon. Tata introduced the Tata Estate back in 1992, the first station wagon. Based on the pickup truck, the Estate had many features that were far ahead of its time, such as a tachometer and power windows which one could not think of having way back in 1990’s. It was powered by 1.9-litre Peugeot-diesel engine and the design was inspired by Mercedes-Benz station wagon.
The Tata Sierra, another iconic SUV needs no introduction here. It was the best off-road vehicle in this segment that carried a lot of oomph and stule. The vehicle was undoubtedly way ahead of its time and still looks pristine and ready to be launched with its original design elements, fit and finish. The Tata Sierra was also based on the Tata pickup truck and was sold as an RWD or 4WD, with rear differentials and manual locking systems. The three door Sierra was launched in 1991. Its design stood out and was powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that churned 63bhp of power.
The launch of Tata Indica was most talked about as it got a diesel engine and was one of India’s first car developed in India. It was launched in 1998, the Indica saw many versions. Within a week of its unveiling, Tata received over 11,000 orders for the Indica.
Next was, the Nano which was an ambitious project by Tata sons and was aimed to allow every Indian to own a car. It was launched in 2008 and was in production till 2018, until the project was stalled due to failed safety norms. The Nano continued to be one of Ratan Tata’s cherished projects.
Among the modern Tata cars launches it is the Nexon, Harrier, Safari and in the small hatch batch segments it’s the Tiago that has managed to get rave reviews and high customer satisfaction rate as well. The Nexon that made a mark is the electric version as the auto industry is transitioning towards EVs. These modern launches continue to be the best-sellers in passenger vehicle segment in India.

Tata’s philanthropic efforts through Tata Trusts and acquisitions like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea significantly impacted education, auto sector and healthcare in India. His belief was that business success should be combined with societal welfare. His vision and humility will be deeply missed.
