The passenger car sales numbers are making Shane Warne happy with their monthly googlies, if you thought the Indian Premier League (IPL) was just about suspenseful finales and having you on the edge of your seat. When Hyundai Motor India overtook Tata Motors to become India’s second-largest automaker, it was a huge moment. In the domestic market, Hyundai registered 51,820 units, compared to Tata Motors‘ 204-unit deficit.

Hyundai’s best-selling car, the Creta, remains its savior, as the firm asserted that it is the best SUV, selling 52,898 units between January and March 2025. Retail data indicates that the South Korean manufacturer had a humiliating experience last month when it lost the number two spot to Mahindra and dropped to fourth place. Hyundai recorded 5,98,666 domestic sales to close up FY 24–25 on a high note, helping it retake the second spot in the passenger vehicle market. Hyundai recorded 1,63,386 units in FY 24–25, propelling it to the top of the Indian export rankings.

In FY 24–25, Tata Motors registered 51,616 units in the domestic market and 5,56,263 units, including 64,726 EVs, narrowly missing the second spot. The Indian automaker had a sales increase of more than 50% in CNG. The business claims that the Punch is the top SUV in India for FY25.

Mahindra may not have had the best monthly sales, dropping to fourth position, but it is the only leading carmaker solely concentrating on SUVs. Last month, the company sold 48,048 units, an 18% increase over March 2024. Mahindra, the top SUV manufacturer in India, sold 5,51,487 units in FY 24–25, a 20% increase from the previous year.
