Mahindra has received 10,000 aluminium batteries from Hindalco Industries Ltd., the biggest aluminium manufacturer in the world, for its EV SUVS, the BE 6 and XUV 9e. Hindalco’s new component manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, also signifies the company’s official debut into the EV component market.

In his remarks, Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco, underlined that this project represents a deliberate move toward domestically produced, high-performance EV components.

He stated, “Our Chakan facility signifies a strategic transition from reliance on imports to high-performance, locally produced aluminium solutions in India’s EV ecosystem.” We are honoured to accompany Mahindra on this journey, which not only demonstrates our dedication to the mobility transition but also Mahindra’s pioneering role in advancing the electrification of Indian transportation.

We are in a good position to collaborate on the development of the upcoming generation of automotive solutions because of our engineering prowess and commitment to sustainability.

The Chakan factory, which was constructed on 5 acres and cost Rs 500 crore, can presently create 80,000 battery enclosures a year, with plans to raise that number to 160,000 units. These cutting-edge battery packs improve battery safety and heat management, increase driving range by 8-10%, and reduce weight by 40% when compared to steel-based designs.

The project’s personnel is also remarkable; almost all of the machine operators at the facility are women, establishing a new standard for gender inclusiveness in the manufacturing industry.

By lowering dependency on imports, the factory supports the Indian government’s “Make in India” agenda and is anticipated to create up to 1,000 jobs. Executive Director & CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Rajesh Jejurikar, stated that Hindalco’s material and engineering advancements have been essential in creating effective, secure, and sustainable battery solutions. The batteries are being developed in collaboration with Mahindra.

In the future, Hindalco wants to increase its market share by providing cutting-edge aluminium solutions to OEMS in India and beyond.

This covers both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) structural and crash-relevant components.

Hindalco’s strategic investments in cutting-edge technology position it as a vital facilitator in the changing automotive landscape as India quickly adopts electric transportation.

Its partnership with Mahindra is a significant step in improving sustainability, lowering reliance on imports, and localising EV components.

By implementing such programs, Hindalco is confirming its dedication to clean transportation and helping to create a more sustainable and greener future for India.
