Lisa Su, the CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), is a highly successful business leader, as she was recently named Time’s 2024 CEO of the Year. Su’s company, chipmaker AMD, is worth $210 billion, and she has been CEO since 2014 and has grown the company significantly.

Su is also known for personally checking prototype chips after they are delivered from the factory. She is the cousin of famous chipmaker Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

She was born in Taiwan and moved to the US when she was three years old. She grew up in New York City and could write simple computer programs from a young age.

Su is known for her hard-charging style of leadership. She expects her team to work hard, including on weekends. She also expects them to be able to discuss important documents in detail, even if they are sent late at night.

Su’s leadership style is not for everyone. According to Patrick Moorhead, a tech-industry analyst, those who don’t meet their commitments find it hard to survive at the company.

Su attended school in the Bronx and later studied electrical engineering at MIT. She earned a PhD in the same subject and started her career at Texas Instruments and IBM.

She joined AMD in 2012 and became CEO just two years later. Su credits her early career success to being lucky and trying new things every two years. Her hard work and leadership style have made AMD a highly successful company.
