Tesla To Recall Nearly 2 Million Of Its Vehicles On US Roads

Elon Musk”s Tesla has decided to recall nearly 2 million of its cars in the U.S. to limit the use of its Autopilot feature. The move has come in light of roughly 1,000 crashes in which the feature was engaged. The U.S. safety regulators had launched a two-year probe concerning the accident.

The restrictions on the Autopilot feature backlash are a big blow to Tesla, as it intends to incur an extra price for this feature. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the autopilot system fails to provide drivers with a sense of security, leading them to potential dangers.

The over-the-air software upgrade will increase the number of alerts that Tesla drivers receive while they are using the “Autosteer” feature of the Autopilot and are not looking at the road. An NHTSA statement states that the alerts will serve as a reminder to drivers to maintain their hands on the wheel and pay attention to the road.

Following the recall, Tesla will be equipped with an autopilot that will check the driver”s attention level more frequently. If the software detects that the driver is not paying attention, when the car is approaching traffic signals, or when the car is off the highway, Autosteer would help.

The NHTSA released a letter to Tesla outlining the recall. The letter stated that Tesla had consented to a software update that will limit the use of the Autosteer feature beginning on Tuesday. The update will limit the use of the feature if a driver repeatedly fails to show that they are prepared to resume control of the vehicle while the Autosteer feature is engaged.
