Signalling a milestone jump towards the commencement of the commercial operations,  Vizhinjam International Seaport today received its location code. The central board, Directorate General of Systems and Data Management, allowed the location code to the port.

In a Facebook post on July 2, the Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram said that it reached the “key milestone by obtaining its location code on June 21, 2024.”

“Announced by Hon’ble Minister for Ports Shri V. N. Vasavan at the Assembly on July 1, this development signifies the port’s readiness to serve as a major transhipment hub. The new code enhances the port’s logistical capabilities, paving the way for increased trade and economic activity in the region,” the post said.

The post also shared the location code “IN NYY 1,” with IN standing for India and NYY representing Neyyattinkara, the taluk where Vizhinjam belongs to, according to a report by The Hindu.  The Rs 7,700 crore project was constructed under the public-private partnership model and is owned by the State government. The Adani Group is one private partner of the project, which will operate the port for 30 years.

The Adani group in April received the shipping ministry’s approval for operating the transshipment port.

Vizhinjam port will be one of the largest ports in the world once commissioned, and is India’s first transshipment Port. Initially, projected to be commissioned in 2019, the delay in commissioning occurred due to several reasons including the issues in the supply of rock required for the construction of the breakwater and the lack of coordination among government departments. The natural disasters and issues related to land acquisition also dragged the work progress.

The sole port with a natural depth of 20 meters, the Vizhinjam port provides options in design to expand in future while facilitating to accommodate even the largest container ships in the world. The port is expected to help India to compete more efficiently in the global shipping market.
