
Vizhinjam International Seaport Set For Commissioning On May 2; PM Modi's Availability Confirmed
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Seaport next month. The Prime Minister’s office on Thursday communicated his availability and planning to visit the port on May 2. The Kerala government is expected to announce the matter soon.
Earlier, there were disagreements over the sharing of the Viability Gap Fund (VGF) for the project, which was resolved through a mutually acceptable deal signed on April 9. The Union Government signed an agreement to sanction Rs 817.80 crore as viability gap funding for the project. The state government has also signed an agreement to share 20% of the revenue from the port with the Union government.

In March, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) granted environmental clearance for the second and third phases of the port’s development.
The tripartite agreement accepting the VGF as repayable as per net present value was signed between the Union govt, Adani Ports and a banking consortium. State chief secretary Sarada Muraleedharan signed the MoU on revenue sharing at a meeting.

The port started operations for commercial purposes in December 2024, after successful trial runs conducted between July and December. Since the beginning of the operation, the port has received over 250 vessels and handled more than 5 lakh TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of containers.
